London 2006 - Day 2 |
Despite our best efforts during our trip to Downing Street Tony Blair didn't want to meet us, obviously in the middle of breakfast. So we tried the next best thing of peering in his back window from the London Eye, again it wasn't happening, so in the end we settled down to an enjoyable trip on the London Eye (capsule 33 out of a total of 32, yes I don't understand that one either... )
Can you see Buckingham Palace!?
After the London Eye we strolled along the Thames past Oxo towers, Television Centres and Theatres to the Tate Modern. A spot of lunch before entering the Tate to sample the best of the world's Modern art. From angry clowns to floor tiles, large plugs to lobster phones and lighthouse movies to cans of pooh we sampled it all...
Overheard quotes from Scouts were:
"it was surprisingly interesting"
"I enjoyed it better than I thought I would"
"it was... different"
"boring"
and our favourite
"my life is complete, I've seen the large plug by Claes Oldenburg!"
Sadly, a month after returning to Bristol the Tate installed two enormous twisty slide things - all in the name of art, we just missed it...
Covent Garden
A brief pause for a photo on the steps of St Pauls was followed up by a tube journey to Covent Garden. As we were running early (yes Scouts running early) there was an opportunity to browse Covent Garden. A big mistake as the Scouts quickly located a street trader selling bits of plastic that made exceedingly annoying noises. Thus walking around Covent Garden a little later there were some interseting reactions from passers by and leaders who quickly produced large collars, dark glasses and big floppy hats from semmingly nowhere...
Ah well, parents can suffer from Thursday evening onwards, but if anyone does come across a man selling annoying bits of plastic, let me know - I'd like a word...
Waiting for the webcam...
We paused outside Belushi's Bar in Covent Garden so we could appear on the webcam. Again we were surprisingly early, hence the hanging about! We also produced interesting reactions from members of the public as to why we were waving frantically at a brick wall for "at least 15 seconds" a time!
It was then onto Pizza Hut where a very nice waiter, and eventually a very handsomely tipped waiter helped us thorughout our meal with remarkable ease.
A little tired after a long day!
