November 2007

Finally, we meet in person! It was fantastic to see Karen and family in London for Live 07. See the blog for a brief run down of the weekend! A few photos to follow here soon!

For one weekend only 19th - 21st Oct 07 we spoke LIVE to America via email...

Here we go then:

20/10/2007

15:08: I've sent my first message

15:09: Message left in Guestbook after the email - another 62nd Scout is going for it!!

15:15: Ok, not a good start, nothing heard as yet - have I got this wrong in some way!?

15:31: Still waiting but not giving up hope!

15:36: We're off! Reply from Karen, everything's going fine with their camp so far... Have replied...

16:06: Popped off to make a cup of tea - I have a reply! This time from the Wolf and Raven patrol at 14:43, they're apparently having breakfast and TRYING to get on the internet! The weather in Mississippi is sunny and cool.

16:23: It's turning into quite a conversation! Breakfast is biscuits and sausage, couldn't resist asking what shape the sausauges were... I had asked if they caught them themselves, unfortunately all caught at Wal Mart 'cos hunting is banned...

16:35: Now speaking to Curlew and Bull Patrols. The Sausages were round patties, they've not seen square ones in a long time either! Next up is lunch and more Brownsea Activities! Doesn't seem long between meal times...

16:53: It's now rather exciting getting a reply! There are 5 62nders' currently online, Sammy, Thomas, Ray, Dan and myself!

16:57: Just been speaking to Dan - he's being asked about 'tea-time'!!

16:58: Signing off for a bit, have a date with a motor race!

There was an odd sense of excitement about talking to someone overseas, almost instantaneously. However, Dan did seem to have more chatty Scouts who were asking questions in return - maybe it's just my email manner!

And this is who we were speaking to (it's always nice to put a face to the email...):

October  2007

Received 23rd October 2007:

I want to thank all who participated in our internet correspondence this past weekend. The scouts enjoyed it immensely!! They had so many questions and comments, I could not type fast enough. We only had the one computer and phone line, which made it difficult. That phone line went out completely, which is why all replies ended. I will be sending pictures shortly. The weekend was wonderful and all the scouts had a great time. Don't be surprised to see some more comments in your Guestbook from other troops in Mississippi!! They all wanted your website address. See ya'll in November!!!!

Recieved 11th OCtober 2007:

Hello 62nd, Hope everyone is doing well. We are gearing up for our long anticipated Brownsea Reenactment weekend, October 19-21. I am setting up some e-mail addresses to correspond as JOTI is the same weekend. We will be dressing, sleeping, eating and learning as they did 100 years ago on Brownsea. My husband, son and I are looking forward to meeting everyone when we come and visit next month!!! A package is winging it's way across the Atlantic with some "stuff" for 62nd. Hope you like!!!LOL More later, your friends in the US.

Update May 2006:

"Hello from across the Atlantic!! It has been a while since I had a chance to browse your website. Congratulations on your International Cooking win! Looks like you have been very busy. Troop 20 has been very busy also. We recently had our Council Scout Show where the troop did some demos on Wilderness Survival. Lots of fun!! I will send some pictures soon. I will be giving out the letters I have received at our next Troop meeting on Monday. More letters would be greatly appreciated, as I would not want to exclude any of our scouts. We are reviewing our Emergency Prep procedures because of the upcoming Hurricane season which is predicted to be a very active one. I ask that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this time. If you have any questions for me, I would be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. So long for now, Karen"
